Bug Teeth
+ Slug + Breadstain
With five green bug hats peeking above the stage, Bug Teeth conjure a world just beyond reach. Oneiric, spellbinding, and insistent, harsh guitars and skittering drum and bass rhythms break through hazy ambient dreamscapes. Lyrics are direct and poetic, each song a slide beneath a microscope, examining the intimate, the infinite, and everything in between.
Born from a DIY spirit, Bug Teeth began as the electronic bedroom project of front-person PJ Johnson, who self-produced spectral melodies. From these delicate, lo-fi beginnings emerged a raw, celestial sound, drawing listeners into its unique gravity. Over time, the project grew into a full band. Bug Teeth’s live performances are both fragile and ferocious, a hypnotic push and pull between distortion and stillness.
Their music bends genre, pulling influences from dream pop, electronic ambience, and breakbeat to craft something that feels both weightless and deeply grounded. Their latest single, Landscaping, expanded their sonic world further, balancing beauty with abrasive grief. With consistent radio and editorial support, alongside a growing cult following, Bug Teeth continue to evolve - shapeshifting, sprawling, and spiriting listeners away into the space between waking and dreaming.
Line Up
Bug Teeth is the solo project of 19 year old Poppy Johnson - hailing from Chelmsford, she studies English literature and creative writing in amidst the bustling music scene of Norwich.
After writing lyrics and melodies for years, it was 2015 when Poppy began making dreamy ambient pop to set her words to music using only a laptop and a guitar. Creating and recording in the space of her bedroom, production is achieved entirely using an interface and GarageBand.
With an idiosyncratic sound awash in delay and reverse reverb, Bug Teeth takes influence from many bands of the late 80s and early 90s, particularly in the shoegaze movement. The style of My Bloody Valentine and Beach House is combined with layers of synth-rich emotional ambience, characteristic of Jon Hopkins and Brian Eno. Combining these layers with 'sincere' poetic lyrics in vocals that have been compared to Grimes, Florist, and Cocteau Twins alike, Bug Teeth's 'sweet and honest' music is both complex and completely simple.
Her debut EP, ‘When All the World Has Gone to Bed,’ can be found on all streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.
