The award-winning quartet Square One are joined by internationally renowned American saxophonist Andy Middleton for an evening of dynamic modern jazz. Hailing from Glasgow’s vibrant scene, Square One are known for their heavy-hitting melodic compositions and energised live performances. Andy Middleton is one of the very top-tier saxophonists living in Europe today, noted for his adventurous virtuosity and incredibly wide breadth of expression. Over a 30-year career, he has collaborated with many jazz greats, including Kenny Wheeler and Randy Brecker. Together they present a programme of colourful and engaging original music, much of it specially composed for this tour.

Square One is an award-winning Glasgow-based quartet, known for their free-spirited original music and energised live performances. The music they play alights upon many modern touchstones such as folk, fusion, soulfulness, ECM euro-cool and stylish, straight ahead jazz - yet it is a clear affinity with great melody and an intelligent musical rapport that makes Square One much more than the sum of all these parts.

This vibrant four-piece are the proud recipients of the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award 2015 administered by Help Musicians UK for emerging jazz artists. This gig is part of the album launch tour for Square One’s debut album ‘In Motion’.

'In Motion', the debut album from the band, funded by the Peter Whittingham Award will be released on October 4th. The album features showcases the band's shared musical understanding and tremendous improvisational daring, but there is considerable intensity too. It is this latter attribute that perhaps excites jazz pundits most about Square One. It suggests that the jazz heritage is not only respectfully preserved by a new generation of professional musicians - it's very much alive and kicking.
